Cosplay, Weapons and Prop Rules

Copies of the convention policies will be available upon request, on the website and at the registration desk over the weekend of Q-Con. It is attendee’s responsibility to read the conventions policies beforehand and to enquire with Q-Con staff directly if any problems, confusion or misunderstanding occurs regarding the following. Failure to comply with these policies may get an attendees pass revoked and they will be escorted out of the venue and banned for the remainder of the convention without a refund. These policies are in place for safety and wellbeing of all of our attendees and ignorance of them will not be tolerated from anyone.

General Cosplay Rules

  • To participate in Cosplay Events at Q-Con attendee must have clearly visible their entrance pass from Q-Con XXIV at all times. Any cosplay clashing excuses will not be tolerated. It is Conventions policy to have these passes visible by all attendees in or without cosplay at all times. Failure to do so will result in delay or rejection of you being signed up for Cosplay events throughout the weekend. This also applies to someone who is in possession, but not wearing their pass.
  • Q-Con is an all age convention so please be aware our Cosplay events have an audience of both children and adults alike so it must be taken into consideration that some material may not be suitable for children or make some people uncomfortable so please be aware of your behaviour and language at all times.
  • Anyone under the age of 14 will be asked to have their adult supervisor be present with them at the sign up desk if they are applying for any cosplay event participation to confirm they are comfortable with under 14 year old attendee to participate in cosplay events (subject to event age restrictions)
  • ALL ENTRANTS WHO HAVE SIGNED UP FOR COSPLAY EVENT PARTICIPATION MUST TAKE PART IN EVENT ORIENTATION, FAILURE TO DO SO WILL MEAN AUTOMATIC WITHDRAWAL FROM THE EVENT PARTICIPATION.

Cosplay at Q-Con

  • First of all “Cosplay is not consent” please be respectable of all attendees at all times. No harassment of any kind will be tolerated by the convention and may result you in being escorted and banned from the convention.
  • Cosplay is not mandatory at Q-Con, but is always welcome and encouraged.
  • Your materials used and cosplay itself must be suitable for general audience of all ages. Nudity, an offensive cosplay or walking barefoot even if it’s part of your character’s cosplay will not be accepted.
  • No skates, rollerblades, skateboards, scooters or “heelies”, or any form of bladed or wheeled footwear is permitted on premises of Q-Con for health & safety reasons. These may be used as prop for the costume, but must be carried and not left unattended at any time.
  • It seems obvious, but your costume shouldn't cause you any physical pain, injury, or damage whilst you wear it. If your cosplay is too large in size difficult to manoeuvre, restricts vision or has mascot type heads or projecting shoulders and requires aid to be transported or walked in from one part of convention to another please bring with you a designated companion to escort you around the convention at all times for health and safety purpose especially to aid you in high traffic areas of the convention.

Props and Weapons at Q-Con

  • All props and weapons must follow the official Q-Con Cosplay, Prop and Weapons rules, no exceptions!
  • Very large or unwieldy props are not permitted in any part of the convention for health and safety reasons.
  • All Masquerade contestants planning to wear weapons at Q-Con as part of their costume MUST present their weapons for inspection upon arrival at Convention Registration. Any unauthorized weapons will not be permitted into the convention.
  • Any potentially dangerous actions involving weapons at the Convention (including on-stage/backstage at the Cosplay Masquerade!) will result in automatic disqualification from the Masquerade.
  • All handgun or firearm related replicas/props must be easily recognised as a replica from a distance – such as bright orange caps/markings on guns. If your gun does not have anything that differentiates it from a real weapon, it will not be allowed into the convention.
  • All firearm-type weapons must be replicas. Airguns, paint guns, water guns and similar are not allowed into the convention.
  • No edged weapons with live blades, or blunt edged weapons heavy enough to cause bludgeoning damage, will be admitted to the convention. Any swords, daggers, bat’leths or other weapons must be judged safe by convention staff at Convention Registration before being admitted to the convention.
  • If your costume or other props features sharp edges, or any other factor that could cause injury to others, you MUST sand, file or smooth off the edges or it will be deemed dangerous and not allowed inside the convention.
  • Due to an increase in archery related TV series and super hero characters in films, we’ve noticed an increase in bow and arrows at Q-Con. Actual archery equipment (compound or recurve bows etc) will NOT be allowed to Q-con due to their obvious dangers. No arrows tipped or blunted will be allowed. No bows made or brought should be under tension.
  • All weapons must be holstered, sheathed or slung in an approved fashion.
  • Your costume and props should be able to fit through a normal door unhindered and not so large as to encumber yourself or others.
  • All weapons or realistic props must be checked and authorised by the Q-Con Committee, and are allowed at our discretion only.
  • Any weapons which fail to meet the safety criteria must be immediately (and discreetly), returned to storage, (e.g.: your hotel room or vehicle), for the duration of the convention. Q-Con will not store these items for you.
  • Actions which could cause injury with weapons, props, or costumes such as horseplay, duelling, fighting, running, swinging etc. are not tolerated and you will more than likely have your weapons confiscated permanently.
  • Venue security staff have final authority over whether any item/article/weapon can be brought into the building. Anyone found in breach of their decisions may be removed from the building at once
